The programme began with a guided campus tour and an introduction to air pollution. Students collaborated on data exploration to develop actionable work plans, participated in an interactive data visualization workshop, received Tableau training for data-driven insights, and learned storytelling techniques to present their findings. The week culminated in a final presentation where participants showcased their projects and proposed solutions.
Key problem statements addressed included the investigation of urban canyon effects in Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po, the impact of marine vessel traffic at Kwai Chung Container Terminals on local air pollution, and the effects of emissions from Hong Kong International Airport on air quality in Tung Chung. Additionally, participants analyzed local air pollution from Star Ferry and Sun Ferry Services, considered the viability of hybrid diesel-electric ferries, and examined the effectiveness of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Certification, highlighting urban inequality.
On September 20th, a sharing session at Valtorta College attracted over 20 of our students and teachers, raising awareness about air quality and encouraging future clean air initiatives. The programme underscored the importance of social justice, stressing that not all areas in Hong Kong have access to clean air. We appreciate the commitment of all participants in working toward a healthier, more equitable environment.
